Lake Rogers Park Phase I Work Underway
Demolition has begun at Lake Rogers Park in preparation for the first phase of a multi-phase improvement project taking place over the next several months.
Span Builders was recently awarded a contract that includes construction of a larger main shelter and upgrades to landscaping and pedestrian access. The existing main shelter structure was removed October 25 with site clean-up work continuing into November. Additional work to update and repair the existing wood dock was previously authorized and will be performed in conjunction with this first phase.
The Creedmoor Board of Commissioners initially voted to approve the full project scope with an engineer’s estimate of approximately $700,000 for the Lake Rogers Park Improvement Project. That scope not only expanded the park to the city-owned acreage on the west side of Lake Rogers but also provided for significant improvements to the existing park; however, due in part to the complexity of the project along with the need to involve multiple subcontractors during the current boom in construction projects across the state, the project did not generate enough interest from bidders to result in competitive bids. The design team and city staff reviewed the project and recommended separating it into phases in order to acquire the most competitive bids possible while accomplishing what the Board had envisioned for the park. In July of this year, a reduced scope of work was approved with the intent that the first two phases of the project be completed within the next year.
Weather permitting, Phase I is expected to be completed in time for the park’s opening in the spring while project engineers and city staff continue to work through options for Phase II. From the original project design, Phase II includes the boardwalk with a pavilion connecting to the west side of the lake, where fishing platforms and a hiking trail are also planned. Lake bed conditions have made the actual construction challenging and several options to change the design are under consideration. Those options will be proposed for board consideration at an upcoming meeting.
Please note that park access will be restricted to the east driveway entrance and construction fencing will be erected around the work site to maintain site safety during construction. Park users are asked to stay clear of the construction area and respect all signs and other barricades intended to provide for their safety.
As the project progresses, periodic updates will be published on the Lake Rogers Park Improvements Project page.
